What Actually Works: Deer-Resistant Native Plants for Full Sun in the Mid-Atlantic

This is Part 3 of my 3-part series on deer-resistant native plants for suburban Mid-Atlantic landscapes. Part 1 covers dry shade, and Part 2 looks at part shade. This final installment takes on full sun conditions.

Compared with dry shade, full sun is easier. There are more species to choose from, and deer sometimes prefer to skulk along shady edges and under cover of trees, so a well-chosen sunny planting has a chance of thriving with less babysitting than a shade bed does. The sunnier conditions also provide plants with more energy to photosynthesize, so if they are browsed, they tend to grow back more quickly.


That is some good news!

As we gardeners know, however, "full sun" is not a complete site description. It is a description of light levels, but it doesn't account for soil type, slope, aspect, or moisture regimes. A bed beside an irrigated lawn doesn't work the same as a steep south-facing bank where rainwater from every storm gushes right downhill. Six hours of gentle morning light is different from six hours of reflected afternoon heat off a road or driveway. A rain garden basin can sit in blazing sun while cycling between standing water and baked, cracked soil within the same week.

So although the plant list for full sun is much longer than the one I developed for dry shade, the underlying principle from Parts 1 and 2 hasn't changed:

The right plant for full sun is one whose entire strategy fits the site.

That means accounting for moisture, drainage, soil, heat, slope, surrounding hardscape, available space, deer pressure, and how the plant will behave in a community over years, not just its first or second season.

What "Full Sun" Actually Means

In gardening terms, full sun means at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. That number alone, though, doesn't completely describe how a site or its resident plants actually behave.

Morning sun is not as strong as late-afternoon sun. A west-facing foundation bed or a strip beside pavement can be noticeably hotter than one more interior to a property. South- and west-facing slopes dry out faster than level ground, while a low, sunny area can stay wet for days after a storm, especially in compacted or clay soils.

Some of the most common full-sun conditions I see in Mid-Atlantic gardens include:

  • Dry, lean sun — hellstrips (those are the strips between the sidewalk and the street), gravelly edges, sunny foundation beds, spots with reflected heat

  • Average garden sun — reasonably drained clay or loam, neither consistently wet nor severely dry

  • Periodically wet sun — rain gardens, swales, pond edges, low spots that flood and then dry down

  • Sunny slopes and banks — fast-draining sites where erosion and access complicate maintenance

  • Open meadow edges — larger spaces where tall grasses and spreading perennials have room to behave more rambunctiously

Different plant species are adapted to these various conditions. Butterflyweed, Asclepias tuberosa, thrives in the driest, fastest-draining spot in the yard but will rot in a wet clay basin. Soft rush, Juncus effusus, is nearly indestructible at the bottom of a rain garden yet won't grow on a hot, dry bank. "Full sun" describes the amount of light but it doesn't describe the site as a whole.

How I Built This Plant List

This list includes over 100 species native to Virginia and/or Maryland, screened for the Mid-Atlantic's classic mix of heat, drought, deer pressure, and often clay soils. Every species has some ornamental value and is available somewhere at garden centers, native plant nurseries, or native plant sales.

Deer resistance was the primary filter. From there, I scored every plant from one to five on three equally weighted criteria, consistent with the rubric I used in Part 2:

  • DR — Deer Resistance: How likely is the plant to avoid significant damage under moderate-to-heavy browse pressure?

  • ASR — Adaptive Site Resilience: How well does it tolerate drought, heat, variable moisture, poor or compacted soil, and general neglect?

  • ER — Establishment Reliability: How likely is it to establish from typical nursery stock and persist over the long term?

The Composite Suitability Score (CSS) is the average of those three. I then applied a conservative star rating on top of the CSS to account for what the numbers don't capture well, such as a narrow moisture niche, mixed deer-resistance reports, limited nursery availability, or unusually specific siting requirements.

How to Read the Ecological Function Categories

As in Parts 1 and 2, I've grouped the list into functional roles that take into account a plant's behavior and reproductive strategy:

  • Structural Matrix Anchors are the backbone plants: species that occupy space reliably, suppress weeds, and pull a planting together visually and ecologically over time.

  • Stress-Tolerant Specialists excel under a particular combination of pressures like deep drought, poor soil, or super heavy deer browse, but aren't necessarily intended to dominate a planting on their own.

  • Naturalizing Colonizers spread by rhizome, sucker, or self-seed. I did not penalize these species for spreading. On a sunny bank or in a large naturalized area, a plant that runs is often exactly what the site needs; it only becomes a problem in a small, tightly designed bed.

The spreadsheet also includes a rain-garden column. A check mark means the plant tolerates the ponding-and-drying cycle of a rain garden basin or middle zone specifically. Note that true rain garden plants are not necessarily ones that like moist soil all the time. They have to be able to withstand the feast and famine of inundation and periodic drought.

Also, my obligatory ecological garden coach reminder: no plant is completely deer-proof. Preferences vary by herd, season, weather, and how hungry the deer are. The reality is that you may need to cage young trees and shrubs until they're above browse height, even species considered reliably resistant at maturity. the cage also protects the trunk from buck rub.


Here are several ideas for plant combos in different full sun conditions to help make sense of things on the list. You can play around by setting up filters in the spreadsheet and choosing plants by type, size, moisture preferences, bloom time, etc.

Plant Combination 1: A Dry, Sunny Pollinator Border

This combination suits a hot, exposed site with dry-to-average soil: a sunny front bed, a parking strip, a driveway edge, or the spot where the lawn always fries first.

Little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) forms the structural matrix. Its upright clumps of blue-green foliage turn coppery in fall and hold their form through winter. It thrives in lean soil and is one of the most reliably deer-resistant grasses on the list.

Weave threadleaf coreopsis (Coreopsis verticillata) through the grass for delicate foliage and a long season of cheerful yellow daisies. Add butterflyweed (Asclepias tuberosa) on the driest, best-drained spots. It's a monarch host plant and a drought specialist, but it will founder in a low, wet pocket.

For a lower, spreading layer, look for straight-species common yarrow (Achillea millefolium, sometimes treated regionally as A. borealis). Its bitter, aromatic foliage is unappealing to deer, and it handles poor soil without complaint. Note that the straight species blooms white. If you are out plant shopping and see all kinds of colored yarrows, those are cultivars or European species. Try to choose the native species to best support local plant populations and pollinators.

Prolong the blooming season with gray goldenrod (Solidago nemoralis), which stays relatively compact in poor, dry soil, and aromatic aster (Symphyotrichum oblongifolium), which blooms very late (often into November!) and whose fragrant foliage makes it more deer-resistant than many other asters.

There is no need to fertilize or irrigate once plants have established themselves. Over-enriching the soil or overwatering makes the grasses and perennials flop.

Plant Combination 2: A Sunny Rain Garden

A rain garden is a place where full sun covers an extreme range of moisture conditions. These plants may sit in standing water after a storm for hours or days and then face drought for weeks in summer.

In a smallish rain garden basin, fox sedge (Carex vulpinoidea) makes for an excellent matrix species: it establishes quickly from plugs, self-sows enough to knit the planting together, and tolerates periodic inundation. In the wettest area, add soft rush (Juncus effusus) for upright structure. For a larger rain garden, switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) provides a taller framework, though it needs room and can spread enthusiastically in rich, moist soil.

For the shrub layer, Virginia sweetspire (Itea virginica) is hard to beat. It tolerates conditions from wet to fairly dry, produces fragrant white flower tassels in early summer, turns crimson in fall, and gradually suckers into a graceful colony without becoming a giant plant.

Among flowering perennials, a combination of swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata), common boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum), and blue vervain (Verbena hastata) generates a summer-long run of pink, white, and blue-violet blooms that feed tons of pollinators. Add New England aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae) toward the upper or middle zone of the rain garden edge for fall color. It can get tall and bare-legged, so place it behind shorter plants or cut it back in early summer.

Remember that a rain garden has zones. The deepest basin needs plants that tolerate actual ponding. The upper, drier edge can support species like orange coneflower, eastern bluestar, or mountain mint that wouldn't survive prolonged standing water.

Plant Combination 3: A Sunny Slope or Bank

Sunny slopes need plants that hold soil, tolerate drought, and eventually reduce how much weeding you have to do while leaning sideways on a hill.

For the low-to-medium shrub layer, try fragrant sumac (Rhus aromatica). It's drought-proof once established, has aromatic foliage that is highly deer-resistant, turns red and orange in fall, and its spreading habit makes it great for erosion control.

On a larger bank where a thicket is welcome and you're okay with taller plants, winged sumac (Rhus copallinum) is another workhorse plant with glossy foliage, strong fall color, and high wildlife value. Its suckering habit can be an asset on a difficult roadside bank but a liability in a small foundation bed, so make sure it's the right plant in the right place.

Use little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) or sideoats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula) as the grassy matrix between shrubs, add moss phlox (Phlox subulata) for low evergreen coverage and spring flowers, then for fall plant anise-scented goldenrod (Solidago odora) and aromatic aster (Symphyotrichum oblongifolium).

Plant slopes densely and repeat species in masses and drifts rather than installing one of everything. The roots need to interlock, the foliage needs to shade the soil, and the planting needs some redundancy so that if a few young plants fail, you aren't left with unsightly, weed-inviting gaps.

An Ordinary Sunny Garden Bed

Although so far you might have concluded that gardening in full sun is tricky, not every sunny site is an obstacle course. If you are fortunate enough to possess average moisture, decent drainage, and at least half a day of sun, the options open up for you. Some of the most broadly adaptable species on the list:

  • Eastern bluestar (Amsonia tabernaemontana)

  • Shrubby St. John's wort (Hypericum prolificum)

  • Wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa)

  • Orange coneflower (Rudbeckia fulgida var. fulgida)

  • Short-toothed mountain mint (Pycnanthemum muticum)

  • Showy goldenrod (Solidago speciosa)

  • Smooth blue aster (Symphyotrichum laeve)

This list would provide seasons-long blooms, from blue spring flowers through summer yellows and lavenders into a gold and blue fall theme. With the addition of a structural grass like little bluestem or switchgrass, you have the bones of a full-season, designed plant community, the same approach I wrote about in Gardening With Designed Plant Communities.

Short-toothed mountain mint deserves a specific note: it's one of the best pollinator plants available and one of the most deer-resistant, and it also spreads by rhizome. It's going to spread. Either plant it in challenging conditions (like matching it with other aggressive spreaders or very dry areas), or plan to edit it back each season. Pulling out the portions that have traveled too far won't bother it.

Installation Notes for Full-Sun Plantings

These combinations are intended to become resilient over time, but remember that nothing is maintenance-free, especially in year one.

  • Plant densely enough to cover the ground. Bare mulch is an invitation for weeds and erosion.

  • Water until plants are well established. Even drought-tolerant species need consistent water while they're building root systems.

  • Protect young woody plants. Cage shrubs and trees until they're tall enough to withstand browse and buck rub.

  • Match the plant to the moisture zone. Not every rain-garden species belongs in the deepest basin.

  • Resist the urge to fertilize. Most sun-loving native grasses and perennials hold their form better in leaner soil. If you find your soil to be especially poor and many of your plants struggle, use a sparing top dressing of compost or fine leaf mulch once a year.

  • Expect the planting to change. Some species will spread or self-sow. A designed plant community is something you edit over time, not something you install once and leave alone.

Final Thoughts

Full sun gives Mid-Atlantic gardeners a wide plant palette. It also creates some of the most demanding conditions: reflected heat, drought, saturated basins, steep banks, compacted soil, and wide-open access for deer. Plus, gardens out in the open are more visible to all.

The goal is not precisely to find a magic list of plants deer will never touch, because sadly, no such list exists (ask me about our juniper shrubs last winter). To be a bit more nuanced, it's to identify native plants whose defenses, growth habits, and site tolerances make them more likely to persist under real-world conditions.
